All books assume that the readers know some facts so these are left unexplained. The New Testament is no exception, so it never (or rarely) explains geography, Pharisees, Sadducees, Roman emperors, the Intertestamental history of the Greeks and Romans, and many other subjects. So, some knowledge of these subjects can significantly help us appreciate our NT.
